Doin' Time

(Linda Bonadies)
DOIN’ TIME

Billy is doin’ his time chasing money
He works for the big company
Buying into the great American dream,
He’s only as big as his salary
He plans to get rich and buy his way out
And then he’ll pursue his real dream
But he’s so possessed by the things he owns
He can’t afford to ever leave
There’s somethin’ always nagging him
Maybe ‘cause he’s living in

A prison of his own design
He fell for it sinker, hook and line
No freedom his soul can find
A victim of his own crime

Judy is doin’ her time looking busy
It’s better than nothing to do
Filling her days with meaningless chores
What’s in her heart she hasn’t a clue
Trapped in her life by her own limitations
Never gave herself a try
Convicted and so guilty of
Watching her own life pass her by
There’s somethin’ always nagging her
Maybe because it occurred

In a prison of her own design
In for life and doin’ time
No freedom her soul can find
A victim of her own crime

A prison of their own design
In for life and doin’ time
No freedom their soul can find
A victim of their own…

Lou’s doin’ time living his parent’s dream
‘ Cause that’s what’s expected of him
What’s deep inside he tries not to remember
He swallows it hard with a tonic and gin
Sue’s doin’ time trying hard to look pretty
Her hair and her makeup come first
All of her life she’ll search in vain
Does she really believe that’s all she’s worth
There’s somethin’ always nagging them
Maybe ‘cause they’re living in

A prison of their own design
No freedom can their soul find
He’s so tired of the grind
She’s washed up and past her prime

I wonder if there’s still time
I wonder if they’ll ever find
They’re doin’ time
